Student Advocates for Healthy Living in Underserved Demographics
A student service venture
What We Do S.A.H.L.U.D.was founded in 2007 with the objective of allowing students to spearhead projects conducted in the local community and abroad. We believe that with group diversity we can innovate and implement sustainable solutions in each of our projects. For that reason, our team is comprised of university students and recent graduates from disciplines in Humanities, Social Sciences, Music and Natural Sciences. This unique blend of talents allows for a tremendous workforce with which we can make a difference in this world. Over the past three summers, S.A.H.L.U.D. has successfully completed rolling medical clinics and public health education workshops in five different Ecuadorian communities. We work closely with community directors to diagnose the specific problems that each community faces, and to develop effective strategies we can execute. Besides distributing medication, we organize doctor visits, complete health surveys, and supply items to improve overall well-being, such as soap, shoes, sunscreen, vitamins, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Volunteers also have the opportunity to express their creativity while constructing plays, presentations and skits intended to instruct children and adults on pertinent public health issues. Using education as our main tool, we feel that our service will have a permanent impact. Our ultimate goal is to improve the daily quality of life in each community we visit, while providing every enterprising, proactive student with the opportunity to pursue their passions in service. |
